A writer who does not speak out of a full experience uses torpid words, wooden or lifeless words, such words as "humanitary," which have a paralysis in their tails.

For All Your Questions on Things Pagan and Magical

Dear Iphegenia,

I was at the fire department and there was this woman there - short, thin, blonde, had never seen her before. I think she was helping out at the f.d. One of my children is with me - it's my oldest son but he's only about 3 years old.

He tells me that the lady found a kitty, and is giving it a shower, and can he go watch? So I say "Yes, you can."

The shower is situated in a center area, kind of like an office cubicle, with no ceiling, but higher than a cubicle. (not that way in real life) I go towards the door to the shower area, and there's blood coming out of the door, onto the floor, just a little bit. Walking in, I find her pushing some red water towards the drain in the floor. My son looks very alarmed, so I ask him what happened.

He said "The cat went POP."

I look at the woman, to explain, and she kind of poo-pooed it, and acted like it didn't happen. She walks out, and my son walks out, and I go further into the bathroom, and look around - blood everywhere, dripping down the walls, on the ceiling, floor. So I take a shower head/hose and start spraying down the walls, trying to get the blood off. Knowing that there is something wrong, but still not knowing quite what to think.

My dream continues as I am going about, doing things, and my son asks if he can take a shower with the woman. I say yes, and he goes in. I'm across the bay from the shower area, and I hear what sounds like flesh hitting flesh. Over and over, and then my son, whimpering. So I run over to the shower area, making sure that I can sneak up and not be observed, when I see her hair, sticking above the cubicle walls. She's looking for me. I stand against the wall so she can't see me, and when she turns her head to look the other way, I continue sneaking up. I know I must not be seen. She turns again and sees me, but this time I see that she is covered with blood. Her face and neck. She looks down into the shower area, and starts punching my son. I get in the shower area, and he is covered in blood, whimpering, crying. I demand to know what happened, and my son said that he didn't mean to drop the shower head on her foot. I find out that not only has she been beating my son, but she apparently stuck something into his pinkie, making it bleed, as punishment. I grab my son and run. She is coming after us, blood all over her, trying to tell me how it was not her fault.

At some point after this I return to the fire department: other people are there, and I am going to let them know what she did. Our assistant EMS chief looks in the other woman's cubby and sees gifts, LOTS of gifts, wrapped, with names crossed out and others put in their place. She has stolen these from the staff, and was going to give them to the people at the fire department.

Needless to say, I'm not wanting to do my little mantra anytime soon.
Thoughts?
alpagmom6

Dear alpagmom6,
First, I have to say that this is a very exciting dream - it shows the process of unlocking and opening up your own inner communication. In my opinion you should be letting it unfold further. As for what it means...

Blonde people symbolize an inner desire to be more vicarious and glamourous in some way. Cats represent feminine power and independence. Children often don't represent themselves but ourselves or other people - young, innocent, childish, etc. Or a desire to return to past hopes/times. If you are rescuing the child then it's likely that, despite looking like your physical child, the child represents yourself. You are saving yourself (the part represented by the child) from something. Showers represent forgiveness and cleansing - a need for these and in the actual showering a sense that these have been obtained. Fire departments are about catering to the needs of others over and above oneself: self-sacrifice that makes one a part of the faceless team.

So...I think that what you saw was yourself (child) wanting to be more socially acceptable. And that this was to be obtained through washing away the inner power you as a woman contain. Dilute and weaken it through a cleansing and forgiving shower. Not saying you want to convert to Christianity and confess your sins(!) but that a part of you desires the social acceptance to be found in conforming to the societal norm.

However, this act of cleansing kills the cat, so to speak - it explodes.... Explosions are about being unable to contain and box up the inner self any longer - bottling up rage leaves one ready to explode at the slightest disturbance. So too with restraining our real nature. Blood was released everywhere and this worried the child. Blood is passion, life, living...the loss of it is about being emotionally sucked dry.

The feminine power (the cat) exploded (POP) when the societal norm (the blonde) tried to cleanse it (shower) of its power so that it could become a faceless part of the group. The blonde wandered away unconcerned - because socially one ignores these things. The destruction of a woman as a powerful being is to be expected and lauded, not worried over. You wanted to clean it all up and started trying to do so. Cleaning is the act of trying to remove the obstacles you face (in this case removing the passion and power so you can be normal). Cleaning the shower is about needing to be clean enough to deserve forgiveness as well as believing the blood is there because of your actions - it's your responsibility that you're in need of cleaning and your fault that the shower isn't clean enough for you to do so.

But deep down you know this is stupid and wrong. The confusion and disconnection points to a deeper belief that this is a false need - that your conscious mind is telling you to be this way and do these things but your spiritual self doesn't understand why or believe it is necessary.

Next the child is drawn back to the blonde to be cleansed and made acceptable. You acquiesce - because after all this is your desire to an extent. To have a nice normal easy life where you don't hide who or what you are. To fit in in all ways. And the blonde beats the child - violence represents unexpressed emotions or feelings. She (ie you as a socially acceptable person) resents him (you as your most natural and pure self) because he stops her from fitting in. Conscious-mind-you grabs child-you and flees. She follows - woman desiring social acceptance through ordinariness stained with the passions of who she really is.

After all, we cannot flee ourselves or our desires - we can only accept and process and move on through them.

The final message she (blonde) has for you is the gifts she stole. Stealing presents is about feeling terribly deprived of things we truly believe we deserve. That it occurs at the fire station indicates that the theft you feel is to do with acceptance and camaraderie.

Hope this helps you understand what is coming out through your dreams,

Iphigeneia, Crone of Hekate

Reincarnation

   By Axiom

With rebirth as the theme this issue, and the closure of last issue coinciding with the Winter Solstice and all that means on a spiritual level, my mind has been dwelling upon the whole concept of reincarnation and what it is. From this I wandered into the realm of souls, existance, and basically the meaning of our deaths.

As far as I can interpret, there are three positions on what comes after we die - every opinion is a permutation on these concepts:

  • End of this life is equal to the end of existence for this organism. With bodily death comes the cessation and termination of consciousness and sentience. The mind is merely an organic entity, part of the body, and nothing of it continues post-death. There is no eternal soul.
  • Classic Judaic-Christo-Islamic perspective upon death is that we live one life, we die, and then our eternal soul continues in an afterlife. The soul experiences continued existence based upon merit - bad souls are punished and good rewarded by the transcendent God.
  • Reincarnation in one form or another. There are two basic systems of belief - the Buddhist and the Hinduist. Hinduism asserts that there is an eternal soul which inhabits body after body, life after life - in much the way we inhabit our clothes. Buddhism does not believe in a soul but rather the progression of material energy through a succession of 'moments of consciousness' that occur over many lives. It is the energy that is ongoing, not a soul.

This third one is what interests me. I have always had difficulty with the concept of reincarnation as a process the soul underwent life after life - it always seemed to me that in such a scenario more people should have an awareness of past lifetimes. And a stronger remembrance. It's all very easy to say we choose to forget but that just reeks of scrambling for an explanation to me. Mind you I could be completely wrong!

Anyway, I have been looking into this Buddhist concept on and off over the years, and this last few months more closely. Not that I desire to become Buddhist - far from it. But there is a "yes" moment for me when I read it.

This energy is believed to power mental activity in a way. Mental activity takes the form of cittas - mental activity formed from consciousness, emotion, perception, and thought. We have a continual stream of cittas throughout our lives. As each is completed, it breaks down and disipates without leaving any residue behind. The body is the physical territory upon which the cittas happen. It's a casual connection at best - the cittas are not connected to the body beyond providing a mechanism for the cittas to arise. In otherwords, the body itself doesn't determine the quality or nature of the cittas.

As cittas break down, they leave an impression upon the arising new ones. This is what provides the stream of consciousness (a cittasantana) and this is what provides us with a sense of identity.

When we die there is no break in the flow of cittas - death is simply the end of a citta and then with the start of a new life the next citta begins. This next life is not connected to the old one - it is simply the first available one after the old died. The stream continues in the new host and the old experiences are there, able to be accessed, just as memories from your current life can be recalled. But, just as old memories usually need a trigger to be recalled, cittas from past lives do too. Without awareness of a past life, there is no easy way to recall it.

It would be easy to mistake the continual stream of cittas as a soul. But a soul is a unique entity, whole and complete within it self, that experiences the world. The citta is the act of experiencing.

I like this concept - it meshes with my own understanding of existence and souls in many ways. I do not believe in souls per se, but rather a two-fold combination of soul and consciousness. I see the soul as the energy that fills everything - the divine. This is the Pantheist in me coming out. When we are born a small portion of the divine fills us - this is our soul. It is both a connection to all things, and a way for the divine to experience existence. My soul is not unique. In my next life, I will probably not have the same soul.

My consciousness and sentience is a different matter though. This is unique and driven by my experiences. It is connected to the divine, yet also distinct. It is this that carries the quintessential "me" and upon my death this bodiless form will reunite with the divine (and thus all other non-corporeal beings) until a new flesh body is ready for it to inhabit. But in this uniting it doesn't lose its integrity and individuality.

My consciousness is aware of the connection to the divine because of my soul but seperated due to being enfleshed. Encased within the bones of my skull. My soul, being energy, is continually in a state of flux, flowing in and out of my body.

It's interesting seeking out different perspectives on souls and life after death. I find it makes me think and reassess my own ideas. Never a bad idea. So, what do you believe happens when you die? Do you have a soul?

Why is this important anyway? Simply put, personal viewpoints influence and control actions. The current fundie attitude towards conservation is a good example. Fundie (ie the obssessive, irrational branch of Christianity) holds the Judaic-Christo-Islamic perspective upon death. Eternal reward for the deserving, hellfire and damnation for the wicked. Jesus himself will restore the earth to a pristine state and rule over it forever. Since the fundies believe they are saved and destined to survive Armaggedon unharmed, it doesn't matter to them if the world suffers in the process. Especially since so many signs of impending Biblical doom have come to pass. Some fundies have gone so far as to get involved in End Times activities (things seen to bring about Judgment Day).

Their beliefs on death have made them a threat. A significant part of that must rest in the ignorance they encourage. They are unlikely to change perspectives let alone believe we need to care for the earth anytime soon. Understanding them gives us a way to communicate with and potentially combat or deflect them. It also gives us insight into what we could so easily be...

Knowledge is power and self-knowedge is the greatest of all.
