Working with Energy
How to Become a Healer Without Harming Yourself - Part IV

   by Catherine M.

Health is the proper relationship between microcosm, which is man, and the macrocosm, which is the universe. Disease is a disruption of this relationship.

~ Dr. Yeshe Donden, physician to the Dalai Lama

Last issue we talked about using Reiki to heal yourself. Using it to heal another person you can touch is a very similar process. You begin the same way:

Have your patient lie down on his/her back and get comfortable. Use pillows if necessary. Take his/her hand and sit for a moment just feeling the energy. Take a moment to ask permission to heal, and ask if s/he feels a need to talk about the injury or illness. Then release his/her hand, sit in lotus and start with the Dancing Fingers Mudra as described in the February issue of Tools of the Trade. Let yourself relax into this, bringing your energy to a balanced state and calm to your mind. When you feel ready, begin:

Concentrate and feel the energy flowing into your body from the universe. Draw it through your body, down your arms, and into your palms. Your palms will probably begin to feel warmer, or maybe itchy. Bring your hands close together, cupping a ball of empty space about 2 times the size of a baseball. I should mention here that depending upon your own experiences, and also what you are taught (if you decide to take formal lessons) you may experience this energy as flowing in through your crown, or the soles of your feet. It doesn't matter how you visualise it as long as you draw in the energy from outside and don't just use your own.

Concentrate on the energy, feeling it leaving your palms. As you breathe in feel the energy rushing into you like a wave washing over the beach. As you breathe out feel it coursing through your hands. Although the energy flows at all times, it's often easier to visualise an ebb and flow pattern at first.

Place your hands upon his/her body.

Note: "laying hands on the body" does not meant actually touching your patient, although you can if you feel a need and your patient is fully comfortable with it. To lay your hands on someone is to position them about an inch from the skin/clothes - close enough to feel the heat radiating from the body, but not touching.

Sense the energy passing into and through you, flowing out and on into your patient's body. Allow your hands to periodically drift over the patient's body seeking the places that "feel" wrong. They may seem hotter, or cause itching in your palms, or call you in some other way. Pay attention as this is your healing instinct telling you were to work. It may seem that the place you are working is not the one requiring healing, but remember. Often an illness is a syptom of another condition. A migraine may originate in hard-working shoulders and back for example.

Remember, pins and needles, electric shocks, strong heat, and other odd sensations are common experiences when doing Reiki. They are indicators of it working, although you don't need to have them to be doing healing. If it gets too intense, move your hands away a little, increasing the distance between body and palms. In later issues we'll discuss using crystals to increase or decrease the effects of Reiki treatments. For now, distance is a useful tool. Take the time to talk with your patient periodically too - often insight into an illness or injury will come out as Reiki is being performed. And, there's feedback as to how your are going. Both are important.

Once the session is complete - and there is no set time. You will reach a point where you can't foucs upon the work - it's time to close. Visualise the energy flowing from your hands trailing off. Instead of flowing into the patient, let it loop back into your opposing palm. Once the connection is broken, shake out your hands, "flicking" away any residual heat from the work. Give the patient a glass of water, and take a moment to connect with him/her. Ask how s/he feels. If any questions or comments have arisen and so on.

Just for today, don't get angry
Don't worry
Be grateful
Work hard
Be kind to others
